10. Alterbridge – Blackbird
I’ll confess I was a huge Creed fan back when they were big. However I should clarify, I wasn’t as much a Creed fan as I was a Mark Tremonti fan! The dude is awesome. It was hard for me to put these guys in at number 10, but the fact of the matter is they haven’t really changed/grown much from the sound of this record. This was just a continuation from the last record. Of course this is just my opinion and others might disagree and I am open to your comments on the matter.
9. The White Stripes – Icky Thump
Jack White is an excellent guitar player. It doesn’t come any more obvious than his work on You don’t know what Love is. The record as a whole loses me around the middle. It dives into some strange territory, not so much for the White Stripes, but just my musical taste. Still a great record just not all the way through as I expected.
Heard these guys for the first time when I went out to LA. These guys put some great melodic material together. Some of the best I’ve heard really, however it seems to all sound the same after a while. That’s not to say it’s not all great, but I like a record to be a little more versatile and dynamic. Still a really good record overall.
7. Linkin Park – Minutes To Midnight
I have to give it to these guys, they realized (before it was too late) that rap rock died a long time ago. I was happy to hear their style change. It was really refreshing. My jaw actually dropped the first time I heard the record. I just couldn’t believe who I was hearing was Linkin Park. Great record. A little political and some of the language is a little more than unnecessary, which might have been what kept it out of the top 5.
6. The Foo Fighters – Echo, Silence, Patients, & Grace.
I love the Foo. Not just because of Nirvana either. Dave Grohl has proven to be one of the greats. My first reaction when I heard that Dave started a band was, Wow this is great but I’m sure it won’t go anywhere. Boy was I wrong. This is a really good record and would probably ended up higher on the list if I had listen to is a little more. That’s the thing about the Foo, they have to marinate. This record isn’t quite ready for the grill.
5. David Crowder *Band – Remedy
Don’t let the 5 spot fool ya, this is an awesome record. I’ve listened to it many times and love it. The only negative thing I would say about this one is that it feels like a musical snack. I don’t get full from the music. It leaves me wanting more. I would say that this is more of a compliment than a criticism. I just wanted more of this record. It easily could’ve been a 20 track record if it were up to me. Crowder is really ahead of the game. Other Christian artists need to sit up and pay attention to these guys because this is how you reach people. Christian music has a bad habit of being behind the musical times. Crowder is way a head of the game.
4. Lifehouse – Who We Are
The anticipation was huge for this album. I went to Meijer at the stroke of Midnight to get it. I was so pumped. For the most part it didn’t let me down. With the exception of one song, every song was good. Seeing these guys live solidified them in the top five because they are so tight on stage.
3. Paramore – Riot.
Okay, let me just say this, I really don’t like female singers in rock bands. I don’t know why, but as a rule I have shied away from them. So that adds a little more validity to the fact that Paramore is so good that they come in at number 3 with a female singer. These guys are a very solid group. Every song on this cd is a hit. If Avril wanted any cred it the punk world, she should’ve went this rout. Then maybe she wouldn’t be looked at as a poser, or sell out at best, in the punk world.
2. Evans Blue – The Pursuit Begins When This Portrayal Of Life Ends
Long album title but these guys are the real deal. I could listen to this CD over and over again. In fact I have. I would say out of all the CDs I have gotten this year I have listen to this one front to back more than any other. I probably listen to it twice a day on average. Shine Your Cadillac is a GREAT GREAT song. Go out and buy this CD you will not be sorry. Also their previous one is really really awesome too.
1. Jimmy Eat World – Chase This Light
Probably the best front to back album I have heard in a long long time. That is if you like their style. This is just great pop-rock! Every song has a hook that you won’t forget. This is one of the best driving CDs ever. It just gets you in a good mood. Not a bad song on the album. This is a must own. I really can’t say one bad thing about these guys. Side note, they are outstanding live!
So That’s the list, according to my expert opinion. Keep in mind there might be better albums that have come out this year but this list is based on Albums I own or have heard. Also there is about a month and a half left of Cds out there to be released so this list might get updated.
